About AARP

AARP was founded in 1958 by Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a retired high school principal. It was born from the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA) which she established in 1947. She wanted to promote her philosophy of productive aging and the need for retired teachers to have health insurance. In 1963, AARP established an international presence by founding ARPI (Association of Retired Persons International). It disbanded in 1969 although AARP still has a worldwide presence. Their founding principles are to promote independence, dignity, and purpose for older persons, to enhance the quality of life for older persons, and to encourage older people “To serve, not to be served.”
