About the Atlanta Zoo

The Atlanta Zoo opened in 1889. A traveling show bound for Marietta, GA stalled before getting to its destination. The animals started to grow crowds, and a businessman George Valentine Gress purchased the collection and donated the animals to the City of Atlanta. They were relocated to Grant Park. 1951 through 1967 was one of the zoo’s greatest times of construction and renovation. In 1961 they added an infant gorilla, and in 1999, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, a pair of giant pandas on loan from China, came to the zoo. The zoo is 40 acres, with 1,500 animals and 220 species. They offer free admission to members of the military.
