About Big 5

Big 5 started in 1955 as Big 5 stores by Maurie I. Liff, Harry A. Liff, and Robert W. Miller. They became Big 5 Sporting Goods in 1963 and Thrifty Drug Stores acquired Big 5 in 1971. In 1997, the company was recapitalized with majority ownership passing to employees. In the early days of the store, they concentrated on WWII army surplus items as well as tents and air mattresses. They started specializing in sports merchandise in 1963. They now have over 400 stores in AZ, CA, CO, ID, NV, NM, OR, TX, UT, WA, and WY. The name Big 5 came from the first 5 stores that were opened in California. Their headquarters are in El Segundo, CA
