About Carhartt
Carhartt was founded by Hamilton Carhartt in 1889 in Dearborn, Michigan to make work clothes for manual laborers. They started with 2 sewing machines and 5 workers.
Their first expansion in the 1890s was focused on the railroad workers’ need for strong and long-lasting work clothes. Within 20 years, they had expanded into 8 other cities including locations in the UK and Canada.
They ended up downsizing during the Great Depression but found their way again during World War II.
Today, they are still a privately held, family-owned company, owned by the descendants of the founder Hamilton Carhartt. You can find them in about 20 states in the US and can also find their product at different retailers.
