About the Louisville Zoo
The Louisville Zoo opened in 1969 and has currently more than 1,100 animals on 130 acres of natural settings representing zoogeographical areas, specific habitat types, or special education areas. It was founded on the land acquired by the city in the 1960s from the estate of Ben Collins. On opening day, there were mostly four-legged animals such as elephants and giraffes. They now have exhibits such as Wallaroo Walkabout, Glacier Run, and Gorilla Forest. They offer free general admission for active duty military.
