About PetSmart
PetSmart was created by Jim and Janice Dougherty in 1986. They opened the first two superstores in Phoenix, AZ under the name PetFood Warehouse in 1987 offering pet food in large quantities. In 1988, they added five additional stores in AZ, CO, and TX and started offering pet adoption events.
In 1989 they changed the name to PETsMART after a new president and CEO took over. They also added pet grooming as well as birds, fish, and small pets. By 1992 they had opened up their 50th store and in 1994 they signed a deal with Banfield Pet Hospital to include their vet clinics in the stores. They spread to Canada and in 1996 created the website. In 2005 they rebranded to be called PetSmart with a new concept and image focusing on humanizing pets. They now have over 1,500 stores in all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and Canada. Their headquarters are in Phoenix, AZ.
