About Roger Williams Park, Zoo, and Carousel Village

In 1871, Betsey Williams bequeathed her 102-acre farm to the city of Providence, in memory of her great-great-great-grandfather, Roger Williams, the founder of Providence. In 1872, small animals and birds were brought to a section of the park. That section was then called the zoo and was one of the first zoos in the US. In 1890, the Menagerie building opened with tigers, leopards, and a pair of lions. In 1930, the first elephant barn opened. In 1978, they started a two-year upgrade project. There have been various upgrades since. The zoo is 40 acres with over 100 species and 150 animals. They normally offer a 50% military discount.
