About Samsung

Samsung began with Lee Byung-Chul back in 1938. He was a part of a large landowning family and moved to Daegu City and founded the Mitsuboshi Trading Company. It started with dealing in dried fish, locally-grown groceries, and noodles. The company prospered.

In 1947, he moved to Seoul but then had to leave when the Korean War began. Byung-Chul then started a sugar refinery and built a woolen mill. The Samsung Trading Corporation started acquiring commercial banks, an insurance company, and other companies.

In the 1960s, the company acquired more insurance companies, an oil refinery, a nylon company, and even a department store. They then first entered the electronic industry in 1969 with several electronics-focused divisions. Their first electronic device was a black and white TV.

In the 1970s, they exported home products overseas. The late 1970s/early 1980s witnessed a big expansion of Samsung’s technology business. Samsung Data Systems was established in 1985 to serve businesses’ growing need for systems development.

Lee Byung-Chul died in 1987 and was succeeded by his son Lee Kun-Hee. Samsung was then split into five companies. In the 1990s, the company continued its expansion into the global electronics markets. The 2000s brought the company the smartphone. They also supplied the microprocessors for Apple’s earliest iPhone models.

The word, “Samsung” comes from the Korean word for “three stars”.
