About the San Antonio Zoo

The zoo is 35 acres, with over 3,500 animals and 750 species.

The first zoo began in 1914 when Colonel George Washington Brackenridge placed bison, deer, monkeys, African lions, and bears on the land he had deeded to the city. The land became Brackenridge Park and Golf Course.

The zoo opened two of the first cage-less exhibits in the US in 1929 that offered people a view of the animals that weren’t available with animals in cages.

The Richard Friedrich Aquarium was dedicated in 1948, and the Hixon Bird House in 1966. The zoo is involved in breeding a number of endangered species.

They offer free admission to members of the military in November of each year.
