About USAA

USAA was founded in 1922 in San Antonio by a group of 25 US Army officers as a mechanism for mutual self-insurance when they were unable to secure auto insurance because of the perception that they, military officers, were a high-risk group.

Originally they were called the United States Army Automobile Association and the name was changed in 1924. Most of USAA’s business is conducted over the internet and telephone with employees, not agents. Until the 1960s, the bulk of business happened over mail. A toll-free number was launched in 1978, and an internet site in 1999.

They started offering homeowners and life insurance in the 1960s, brokerage and investment management services in the 1970s, and banking services in the 1980s. They did offer restricted membership to civilians between September 2009-August 2013. During that time, non-military members were not able to have auto and property insurance policies due to eligibility restrictions. USAA caters to the military and you can receive auto insurance discounts if you are banking with them.
