These Programs Can Help Your Military Child Get Ahead When It Comes to Their Education

As parents raising military children, we are always looking for ways to help them learn and give them new experiences, no matter where we live in the world. From tech programs to programs that offer college credits, here is a list of programs for kids K-12 to help them learn and grow and prepare for life after high school.

The USAFA STEM Outreach Program

Within the United States Air Force Academy Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Outreach Program, the faculty and cadets work with the local community, schools, and teachers to provide outreach and increase the effectiveness of the air force’s investment in STEM. They offer many resources for teachers such as cadet STEM read-aloud for K-5, planetarium shows, and a lending library.

In addition, they also offer programs such as Physics is Phun Demonstrations, STEM Professional Development, Virtual Audience with an Astronaut sessions, and energy camps for 10-year-olds.

AP Classes

AP (Advanced Placement) classes can help high schoolers earn college credit. They offer 38 subjects including English, Social Science, Mathematics, and other languages. Students will take the AP test for their subject and earn college credit after they have completed an AP class. AP tests can also help in getting into certain colleges.

CLEP Exams

CLEP (College Level Examination Program) exams can help obtain college credits in high school. CLEP exams are similar to AP exams however, they are not associated with a class. Students would need to study and prepare for these exams on their own. CLEP exams can be taken during the year and students can receive college credit at 2,900 colleges.

Stride K12-Powered Online Schools

Stride K12-Powered Online Schools are designed to provide military families the consistency of personalized learning, certified-teacher support, and quality curriculum that supports children’s education and military lifestyles. They have a personalized approach with a National Learning Coach Community that is designed specifically for military families. 1,600 military families are currently enrolled. They have online public schools in many states, online private schools which have a military discount and summer school programs, and individual courses where you could create your own curriculum using over 250 courses in core subjects, with a 15% military discount on early learning programs.

Summer Programs

In addition to the above programs, you can view this list of over 150 colleges that have summer programs for high school students. These programs give high school students the opportunity to take classes at a college and experience college life during the summer.
