VA Announces Limited Free Veterans Group Life Insurance Coverage

The Department of Veterans Affairs announced a waiver that will cover three months of life insurance premiums for thousands of former military personnel starting November 1, 2026.
People with active Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) will pay $0 in premiums for November 2026, December 2026, and January 2027. Full insurance protection stays in place throughout the ninety-two-day period.
Policyholders qualify without filing paperwork, submitting proof, or calling an agent. If an account is in good standing on November 1, 2026, the system automatically applies VGLI relief. No action is required by the veteran.
Restrictions Apply
A veteran whose policy cancels or lapses on or before October 31, 2026, may not qualify for this relief. Those carrying overdue premium balances must pay their accounts in full before November 1 to keep their coverage active and claim the benefit.
Veterans transitioning during late 2026 also have caveats. SGLI rules give departing personnel 120 days of free coverage. New Veterans’ Group Life Insurance policies cannot take effect until day 121.
And what about new VGLI enrollees whose policies begin mid-holiday? Do they receive partial relief? When a policy takes effect in November 2026, the veteran pays the standard November premium as the initial activation fee, then receives December and January free.
If coverage starts in December 2026, the December premium activates the policy, making January free.
For veterans who pay via allotments from military retirement checks or VA disability compensation, VGLI makes no deductions for the November, December, and January billing periods. No action is needed.

For Those Who Qualify
Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance agreed to pause monthly premium payments for ninety days for VGLI policyholders using its automated payment tool. The office resumes those paused payments on February 1, 2027.
Automatic bill-pay systems will not stop payments because of this program–your automated bill-paying options typically operate independently of federal agencies. VGLI policyholders must cancel their scheduled November 1, 2026 payments and cancel those through January 2027. You should restart VGLI payments on February 1, 2027. This will not happen automatically.
When policyholders pay on quarterly, semi-annual, or annual schedules and have already submitted funds covering the holiday window, the program issues no cash refunds.
Instead, you receive credits for the excess funds, which are applied to future billing statements. Any payments mailed during the pause follow the same rule. The office banks the money as an account credit and pushes back the next due date.
What To Know About the VGLI Premium Holiday
The VA claims it will send standard monthly invoices to mailboxes and online portals starting in January 2027 to collect the upcoming premium due February 1, 2027.
Veterans’ Group Life Insurance premiums adjust across five-year age groups. When a veteran crosses VGLI age thresholds in November, December, or January, the higher rate takes effect immediately (on paper), but under this VA plan, you could have the entire cost waived during the relief program.
Veterans can also seize the opportunity to increase their coverage limits. Under current rules, policyholders under age sixty can buy extra coverage every five years on their policy anniversary without medical underwriting.
If a veteran exercises that option during the three-month window, the expanded coverage begins right away at no charge during the holiday months. The increased premium rate is added to the invoice once normal billing resumes.
The three-month program covers only Veterans’ Group Life Insurance. It excludes active-duty Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance, Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance, and Traumatic Injury Protection.
Veterans insured under Veterans Affairs Life Insurance or older policies like Service-Disabled Veterans Insurance must continue paying regular monthly premiums.
