About the Knoxville Zoo
The zoo is home to about 800 animals and is known to have bred the first two African elephants that were born in the Western Hemisphere in 1978. The zoo was started with a newspaper’s 1923 initiative to start a park for poor children but it was slow to open. Eventually, it did as the Birthday Park and that was closed in 1946. It was then reopened as the Municipal Zoo in 1951. The first attraction was an alligator named Al. The modern Knoxville Zoo was born in 1971. They offer a discount on annual zoo memberships as a military discount.
