Millions of Veteran Records Exposed in Defense Manpower Data Center Hack
The Defense Manpower Data Center announced a hacking incident that compromised military records belonging to more than 3 million people. Federal News Network reports the hack exposed files for approximately 2.76 million living people and 294,000 deceased.

The incident exposed a large amount of sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, full names, contact information, gender, race, and military occupational specialties. Veterans and military retirees are potential victims of this incident.
According to some sources, the compromised records were stored as unencrypted files, and a flaw in a file-sharing system allowed unauthorized access to a Defense Manpower Data Center server between October 2025 and July 2026.
Because of the time between the hack and its detection, it is safe to assume any potentially affected agency records were compromised. At press time, no information explained why the Defense Manpower Data Center, which presumably has IT support as a standard feature of its operations, could be compromised for approximately NINE MONTHS without detection.

After the Hack
Agency personnel identified the vulnerability July 16, 2026. Federal News Network reports that technicians patched the system while agency officials began privacy and cybersecurity responses.
The department began notifying affected personnel, and while federal officials may claim there is no evidence of misuse of the exposed personal records, it’s safer to assume the opposite and respond accordingly.
In the meantime, the Department of Defense is offering affected people credit monitoring and identity repair services.
What is the Defense Manpower Data Center?
The Defense Manpower Data Center oversees personnel records for active-duty troops, reservists, retirees, civilian employees, contractors, and military dependents. It operates under the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness and serves as the Department of Defense’s central data organization.
Its mission centers on maintaining an archive of personnel, training, and financial records across the armed forces. The organization also supports the information requirements of defense leadership, the military services, and the federal government.
