About KinderCare Learning Centers

KinderCare Learning Centers were founded by Perry Mendel, a real estate developer, after speculating that the increasing numbers of women entering the workforce will increase the demand for preschool care. They began as Kinder-Care Nursery Schools with the first facility opening in 1969, with 70 children. The second facility opened in 1970, and then the name was changed to Kinder-Care Learning Centers. By 1971, 19 centers were in operation and the first infant care was offered.

Over the years they have acquired different companies including Sylvan Learning Centers in 1987. In 1992, they became KinderCare Learning Centers. In 2005, they were acquired by the Knowledge Learning Corporation division of Knowledge Universe. In 2015, Partners Group bought Knowledge Universe. Knowledge Universe was renamed as KinderCare Education in 2016. You can find them in 39 states, and Washington DC. They have over 2,000 centers, including before and after-school programs as well as employer-sponsored centers. Their headquarters are in Portland, OR
