About the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere

The Nashville Zoo has around 6,200 animals, encompassing around 339 species. The zoo is 188 acres, and the property was once a 300-acre farm owned by Michael and Elizabeth Dunn. The original home is still on the property. The Croft sisters, who were the last of the family members to live on the property, deeded the land and family home to the Children’s Museum of Nashville in 1964, with the agreement that the house would remain and be used as a “nature study center.” In 1985, the museum began working on the Grassmere Wildlife Park, which then closed in 1994. The City of Nashville took over ownership of the property in 1995. The Nashville Zoo opened in 1991 in Joelton, TN, and in 1997, the Nashville Wildlife Park at Grassmere opened. The zoo in Joelton then closed in 1998.
