About Omaha Steaks
Omaha Steaks was founded in 1917 as a butcher shop in Omaha, NE by J.J. Simon and his son when they came to America to escape antisemitism from Latvia. Omaha reminded them of home. They started as a cattle carcass operation and in 1924, they began to sell cuts of meat to local supermarkets, national grocery chains, hotel restaurants, and institutional customers. They brokered a deal with the Union Pacific Railroad to serve Omaha Steaks in the dining cars in the 1940s. This prompted the company to launch its first mail-order ventures in 1952 and in 1966, they became Omaha Steaks International. Their first retail store opened in 1976 and they opened their first store outside of Omaha in Houston in 1985. They now have 40+ retail stores as well as their website. Their headquarters are in Omaha, NE
