About Sun Valley

Sun Valley opened to the public in 1936 after Count Felix Schaffgotsch of Austria found the 4,300 acres for a ski resort for the Union Pacific Railroad. When the resort opened it was said it was, “America’s First Destination Ski Resort.” Many celebrities have come to the resort over the years including Ernest Hemingway, the cast of I Love Lucy, and Adam West. In 1942, the resort was closed and converted into a convalescent hospital for the US Navy. The resort reopened to the public in 1946. Snowmaking was introduced in 1975, and over the years the resort has changed hands and expanded. They now have 121 runs.
