VA Lowers Life Insurance Premiums

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced that, starting on 1 July 2025, over 3 million Veterans, service members and their spouses will have lower VA life insurance premiums.

The premium reductions apply to those with Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI), Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI), and Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FSGLI). The lower rates apply to current policyholders and future applicants alike.

Lower SGLI Rates

SGLI is group term life insurance coverage up to $500,000, in increments of $50,000. According to VA.gov, SGLI premiums decrease from $0.06 per $1,000 to $0.05 per $1,000 of coverage. As of 1 July 2025, SGLI premiums for maximum coverage ($500,000 coverage at press time) are $25 plus $1 for Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI).

Lower FSGLI Rates

FSGLI is the family version of SGLI. It insures dependent children at no cost and coverage for the spouses up to $100,000, not to exceed the amount of the service member’s SGLI coverage. VA.gov says FSGLI premium rate discounts “vary by age, ranging from 11% to 22%, with an average discount of approximately 13%.”

Lower VGLI Rates

VGLI is offered to qualifying veterans who want to keep their life insurance coverage after separating from the military. ensuring long-term financial protection. Starting July 1, 2025, monthly premiums for VGLI will be reduced for all ages with discounts as much as 17% depending on age. VA.gov claims the “average reduction” is 11% for VGLI.

For all of these options, the insurer initiates the change in premiums; you don’t have to apply for them. VA.gov advises that you may need to adjust your payment amount personally, however.

Automatic Rate Adjustments

If you are eligible for reduced rates, you should automatically receive them when the new rates become effective. If you are still waiting for a change in your rates after 1 Juy 2025, contact the Department of Veterans Affairs as soon as possible.

The VA encourages all eligible Veterans to review the life insurance options available to them by visiting the VA websites for SGLI, FSGLI, VGLI, and other programs.

Lower VA Life Insurance Rates by the Numbers

  • How many veterans? Approximately 450,000 VGLI policyholders will see their premiums reduced by 2% to 17%. The average discount being 11%. The specific discount may vary based on the Veteran’s age.
  • How many currently serving? Roughly 2 million active duty, Reserve, and National Guard members with SGLI will see premiums lowered from $0.06 to $0.05 per $1,000 of coverage. This will reduce the cost of the maximum $500,000 coverage amount from $30 to $25 per month. With the $1 monthly charge for Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI), most service members with maximum coverage will have a monthly deduction of $26.
  • How many military spouses? Around 870,000 spouses covered under FSGLI will see premium reductions ranging from 11% to 22%, with an average discount of 13%. The exact discount will depend on the spouse’s age.

According to the VA official site, the Department of Veterans Affairs currently provides $1.5 trillion of insurance coverage to nearly 6 million Veterans, service members, and their families. “These premium reductions will help make life insurance more affordable,” said VA Under Secretary for Benefits, who was quoted in a VA press release.

Types of VA Life Insurance

  • Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI): This option is for life insurance while still serving.
  • Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FSGLI): Coverage for spouses and dependent children.
  • Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI): Short-term financial support to help you recover from qualifying injuries.
  • Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI): Group term life insurance for vets.
  • Veterans Affairs Life Insurance (VALife): “Guaranteed acceptance” whole life insurance for those with a service-connected disability.
  • Veterans’ Mortgage Life Insurance (VMLI) is another option for those with a severe service-connected disability. This is mortgage protection insurance for a specially adapted home.
