Veteran Fraud Protection Bill Passes House of Representatives

The House of Representatives passed the Veterans Scam and Fraud Evasion Act (VSAFE) in late January 2026, a bill designed to protect the military community from fraud.

The legislation, if signed into law, establishes a Veterans Scam and Fraud Evasion Officer within the Department of Veterans Affairs to supplement the ongoing VSAFE program.

According to the House bill, the new officer position is intended to oversee fraud prevention, reporting, and response plans. This bill coordinates work across the government to stop actors who target the veteran community, which some sources claim experience 40% more fraud attempts than other Americans.

The legislation requires promoting the existing VSAFE Fraud Hotline (833-38V-SAFE) and coordinating with the Inspector General, the Department of Justice, and the Federal Trade Commission.

No New Hire

The legislation does not increase the number of employees at the department, directing internal personnel shifts instead. The VSAFE initiative also gathers cross-department expertise from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Department of Education, and the Federal Communications Commission.

The House Committee for Veterans Affairs Chairman released a statement after the passage of the bill, noting:

“At a time when scammers are using every savvy trick at their disposal to take advantage of veterans and seniors, we must ensure that VA is ahead of the curve to protect veterans’ benefits,”

He adds, “No veteran should have to worry about their benefits being stolen, and VA must have the right tools in place to safeguard veterans and their families from fraud.”

VSAFE Built-In Expiration Date

The VSAFE Act terminates on Sept. 30, 2030, to allow Congress to review the program’s effectiveness. That said, at the time of this writing, the VSAFE Act is not yet law. It must pass the Senate next, then proceed to the President’s desk for signature or veto. This is an ongoing story.

How to Use VSAFE.gov

The VSAFE bill affects operations at the already-running government website of the same name.

VSAFE.gov is a resource hub for veterans, service members, and their families to prevent and report fraud. The platform consolidates resources from multiple federal agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Federal Trade Commission, plus the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Begin using VSAFE.gov by browsing the Document Library, which has advice about common scams targeting the military community, including claims, predators, identity theft, and employment fraud.

Are you the victim of a scam? Use the VSAFE Fraud Hotline at 833-38V-SAFE (833-388-7233). The line operates on a “no wrong door” principle, meaning the operator directs your specific concern to the appropriate federal agency.
