About The Columbus Zoo
The zoo is home to more than 7,000 animals and over 800 species. The zoo is over 400 acres. The first zoo in Columbus was known as “the zoo” and was operated by the Columbus Zoological Company and opened in 1905. That zoo ended up closing just five months later. The current Columbus Zoo opened in 1927 as the Columbus Zoological Gardens. Jack Hanna was the director from 1978 to 1993, but was later named Director Emeritus of the zoo and continues to be the public face for the zoo in marketing campaigns. They offer a $2.00 military discount.
