About PetSmart

Jim and Janice Dougherty created PetSmart in 1986. In 1987, they opened the first two superstores in Phoenix, AZ, under the name PetFood Warehouse, offering pet food in large quantities. In 1988, they added five additional AZ, CO, and TX stores and started offering pet adoption events.

In 1989, after a new president and CEO took over, they changed the name to PETsMART and added pet grooming, birds, fish, and small pets. By 1992, they had opened their 50th store, and in 1994, they signed a deal with Banfield Pet Hospital to include their vet clinics in the stores. They spread to Canada and, in 1996, created the website.

In 2005, the company rebranded as PetSmart with a new concept and image focusing on humanizing pets. PetSmart now operates over 1,500 stores in all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and Canada. Their headquarters are in Phoenix, AZ.
