VA Specially Adapted Housing Assistive Technology Grant Program
Applications for the 2024 VA Specially Adapted Housing Assistive Technology grant are now open through midnight on April 28.
The SAHAT program funds developers, researchers, and “individuals” working to innovate adaptive technologies to benefit disabled veterans, including thought-based assistive technology for those suffering from neuromuscular conditions as a result of their military service.
These new and improved technologies include modifications to homes to function as smart homes, and monitoring services for safety and voice-controlled smart devices.
Grant Funds Up To $1 Million
Up to $1 million dollars in grant money is available to qualifying specialized individuals through SAHAT for their work on adaptive living technologies. These awards are typically offered in amounts up to $200,000 per grantee.
Aid given through these grants has directly improved the tools used to ensure the safety and quality of veterans’ lives, enhancing their potential to live as independently as possible.

Rewarding Innovation
Since 2016, the SAHAT grant program has annually awarded qualified and selected applicants the newest technologies. This grant program was created through the Veterans’ Benefits Act of 2010, Section 203, to extend options for home adaptation to eligible service members and their families.
The annual grants, selected by the VA Loan Guaranty Service executive director, VA staff with construction and housing adaptation experience, occupational therapists, rehabilitation engineers, and other qualified individuals, make up the selection committee for grants.
Awardees can use the funds to develop adaptable technologies that could help veterans live unassisted and, in most cases, on their own. These technologies include voice-recognition or voice-command devices, environmental controls, and even adaptive feeding equipment that can allow the veteran to live more comfortably in their home.
Deadlines
To apply for the SAHAT grant, register and submit your application through www.grants.gov before the deadline of April 28 as posted in the Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA).
Applications are only accepted during the stated window and must meet requirements to be considered. On the website, find the application by searching for “Specially Adapted Housing Assistive Technology Grant” or “SAHAT” to apply.
Those chosen receive their funds through the Department of Health and Human Services Payment Management System (PMS). Awarded recipients must register with PMS to receive their funds through the Department of Health and Human Services.
