TRICARE Virtual Urgent Care

If you serve in the continental U.S. (CONUS) and are enrolled in TRICARE, you may have a new virtual urgent care option. Designed for Prime beneficiaries in the United States, the TRICARE virtual urgent care feature is part of a broader effort to modernize the military healthcare system.

TRICARE Virtual Urgent Care
The new TRICARE program allows Prime enrollees who typically see a primary care manager at a military hospital or clinic to access medical professionals through the Military Health System Nurse Advice Line. The process begins with a screening to determine whether the medical need qualifies for a virtual appointment.
If so, the nurse schedules a virtual appointment with a provider from the Virtually Integrated Patient Readiness and Remote care clinic, typically offered on the same day or the following day.
Scope and Availability of Virtual Care
The virtual urgent care program is, at press time, limited to TRICARE Prime beneficiaries aged 12 and older who are residing in the United States. It is not available to those living overseas or in U.S. territories.
Every virtual encounter is documented in MHS GENESIS, the military’s electronic health record system, providing care providers with access to the patient’s complete medical history.

Common Conditions and Treatment Capabilities
The virtual platform is designed to handle non-emergency medical needs that do not require an emergency room visit. Common conditions treated through this service include:
- Sinus congestion, infections, coughs, and sore throats.
- Rashes and acne.
- Headaches, muscle pain, and joint pain.
- Management of seasonal or environmental allergic reactions.
In addition to providing medical advice, virtual providers are authorized to write prescriptions. These orders are sent directly to the beneficiary’s preferred pharmacy, enabling immediate treatment after the virtual consultation.
Cost Structure and Pharmacy Benefits
The virtual urgent care option at press time offers medical services with no out-of-pocket costs for TRICARE Prime beneficiaries. The service is managed directly by the Defense Health Agency, and it functions as an extension of the direct care system. Active-duty service members and their families have no copayment for urgent care visits when the visit is coordinated through the Nurse Advice Line.
While the virtual consultation itself is free, costs may apply to any prescriptions written during the visit. The amount a beneficiary pays for medication depends on where the prescription is filled. There is no cost for prescriptions filled at a military hospital or clinic pharmacy.
At retail network pharmacies or through home delivery, beneficiaries typically pay a copayment based on the drug’s tier. However, active-duty family members enrolled in TRICARE Prime Remote who live in the United States have their pharmacy copayments waived for both home delivery and retail network pharmacies.
How to Use the Virtual Care System
To start the process, contact the MHS Nurse Advice Line at 800-TRICARE (874-2273) or visit the dedicated Nurse Advice Line website 24/7.
Calling the advice line allows a nurse to document the medical necessity of the visit in MHS GENESIS, which serves as the authorization required to maintain the $0 copayment framework.
