TRICARE Teledentistry

Between deployments, training rotations, and living in remote or rural areas, getting into a dentist’s chair isn’t always as simple as making an appointment down the street. Enter the newest evolution in military healthcare, teledentistry.

Virtual medicine isn’t exactly new, but TRICARE is now making digital dental care a standard part of its operations through the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP). That means, whether you’re at a major base or a remote outpost, you can now get expert advice through a secure connection.

TRICARE Teledentistry

Teledentistry isn’t a replacement for your dentist; it’s a modern evolution in how they reach you. Think of it as a collection of digital tools designed to make dental care more accessible, rather than a standalone service.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), teledentistry falls into four main categories:

  • Live Video (Synchronous) is a real-time, two-way conversation with your provider. You can discuss concerns or show the dentist a specific issue as if you were in the office.
  • Secure Data Sharing (Asynchronous) involves sending assets such as X-rays, high-resolution photos, or digital impressions through a secure system. Your dentist evaluates this data on their own time to diagnose a condition or plan your next step without requiring a live appointment.
  • Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) involves collecting your dental health data from home and transmitting it to your provider. Using this data, your dentist tracks your progress and manages ongoing care between physical visits.
  • Mobile Health (mHealth) refers to the use of mobile devices to support your oral health and includes everything from specialized dental apps to educational outreach delivered directly to your laptop or phone.

While virtual visits do save time, they lack the hands-on nature of a physical exam. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing that by acting as a high-tech second opinion for your dentist. Tools like Overjet (FDA-cleared) are now used to analyze digital scans and X-rays with incredible precision.

This has led to the rise of “Hybrid Care,” which is essentially the best of both worlds. Instead of choosing between an app and an office, the AI model combines the two. You might start with a smartphone-based screening at home and only head into the clinic when the data shows you need hands-on work.

Benefits of Virtual Dental Visits

The most immediate perks to teledentistry are convenience and accessibility, but beyond saving time and energy in getting to an office, these appointments can reduce anxiety. If you get nervous stepping into a clinic, a virtual consultation in a familiar, low-stress environment like your home is a less intimidating event.

Even though the exam is conducted on a screen, the quality of care is consistent with that of an in-person visit.

Dentists are legally responsible for ensuring they have information (e.g., clear photos or digital records) to provide a diagnosis and treatment plan. To make this work, your dentist will often give you specific directions on how to help, such as using a mirror or positioning your camera to get a clear view of your mouth.

If the dentist determines that a situation is an emergency or requires physical contact, they must have the local knowledge to refer you to an acute care facility or a nearby office for immediate follow-up.

Finally, you shouldn’t have to wonder who’s on the other side of the screen. The ADA states that you have a right to full transparency, meaning you should know the dentist’s name and qualifications before the call even starts.  You’re also entitled to see their licensure and board certification details in advance, so you can be sure that the person giving you advice is just as qualified as a provider you’d see in a dental office on base.

What Does Tricare Cover?

TRICARE covers teledentistry as a diagnostic service. It’s treated as a way to handle evaluations without the office visit, but it isn’t an unlimited benefit. Under this program, you are eligible for one teledentistry evaluation within a consecutive 12-month period.

The TDP allows for two routine in-person exams per year. While this once-per-year virtual session counts toward your diagnostic care, it doesn’t replace both of your annual routine cleanings/exams. And if you stay in the network, you don’t pay a dime for the virtual visit.

How to Get Started

TRICARE enrollees should use the United Concordia (UCCI) portal and use the “Find a Dentist” tool to filter for providers offering teledentistry. You can also log into your milConnect account to check for the latest TDP Handbook updates or sign up for TRICARE email alerts to stay on top of new benefit bulletins.

If you already have a regular dentist, the quickest move is to call their office directly to see if they’ve added virtual triage to their services, so you can skip the trip to the clinic.
