VA Lowers Life Insurance Premiums in Spring 2025
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced that over 3 million Veterans, service members, and their spouses will have lower VA life insurance premiums starting in spring 2025.
The premium reductions apply to those with Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI), Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI), and Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FSGLI). The lower rates apply to current policyholders and future applicants alike.

Who Gets Lower VA Life Insurance Rates in 2025?
There are three basic demographics. Starting in the spring of 2025, qualifying military members, veterans, and military spouses may all pay less for VA life insurance.
- Veterans: Approximately 450,000 VGLI policyholders will see their premiums reduced by 2% to 17%, with the average discount being 11%. The specific discount may vary based on the Veteran’s age.
- Service Members: Roughly 2 million active duty, Reserve, and National Guard members with SGLI will see premiums lowered from $0.06 to $0.05 per $1,000 of coverage. This will reduce the cost of the maximum $500,000 coverage amount from $30 to $25 per month. With the $1 monthly charge for Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI), most service members with maximum coverage will have a monthly deduction of $26.
- Spouses: Around 870,000 spouses covered under FSGLI will see premium reductions ranging from 11% to 22%, with an average discount of 13%. The exact discount will depend on the spouse’s age.
According to the VA official site, the Department of Veterans Affairs currently provides $1.5 trillion of insurance coverage to nearly 6 million Veterans, service members, and their families.
“These premium reductions will help make life insurance more affordable,” said VA Under Secretary for Benefits Josh Jacobs, who was quoted in a VA press release.
Jacobs adds, “We want to ensure that Veterans and service members have the security of knowing their families will be taken care of financially.”
Automatic Rate Adjustments
If you are eligible for reduced rates, you should automatically receive them when the new rates become effective. If you are still waiting for a change in your rates in the spring of 2025, contact the Department of Veterans Affairs as soon as possible.
The VA encourages all eligible Veterans to review the life insurance options available to them by visiting the VA websites for SGLI, FSGLI, VGLI, and other programs.
