About The Milwaukee Zoo
The Milwaukee Zoo has 1,800 animals on 190 acres. The West Park Zoo opened in 1892 displaying small mammals and birds. Two years later they added two cinnamon bears and created an iron bear den. In 1900, the zoo became the Washington Park Zoo and was expanded two years later. In 1942, the zoo director began planning a new zoo. The name was changed to the Milwaukee County Zoological Gardens in 1953 and opened to the public in 1961. They added an animal hospital in 1963, the Children’s Zoo in 1971, and the Polar Bear Underwater exhibit in 1986. They have a Military and Veterans Family Day in June.
