Naval Base Ventura County – Point Mugu/Port Hueneme History

Point Mugu and its neighbor site, Port Hueneme have aided the Army, the Marines, the Air Force and the Seabees through many conflicts since its founding in 1946.

Known as Naval Base Ventura County, or NBVC, this site focuses on systems development, research and innovation. Point Mugu emphasizes support of aviation, while Port Hueneme compliments the site with base operation support.

Naval Base Ventura County – Point Mugu/Port Hueneme supported all military branches while fighting in World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Merging together at the beginning of this millenia, these sites are essential to modern military success in the region.

Naval Base Ventura County – Point Mugu/Port Hueneme Surrounding Area

A short drive from Los Angeles, California, Point Mugu has ideal weather almost year-round. Near both beaches and mountains, this location allows for recreation and ample work opportunities for residents.

Its scenic location does come with a higher cost of living, however, military service members can find that the local community ensures a safe area and affordability options for those in the service.

Point Mugu is situated in a sought-after area of the California valley, where the sun shines most of the year and a variety of outdoor recreation activities keep families busy.

There is no transportation between the two bases, so having a vehicle will allow service members access to the various parts of the base as well as nearby attractions.

For lovers of the great outdoors, Point Mugu State Park is a favorite because of the pleasant weather and the renown views and overlooks. After taking in nature, other well-traveled sites include Point Mugu Missile Park and the Commemorative Air Force Southern California Wing Museum in Camarillo.

Naval Base Ventura County – Point Mugu/Port Hueneme Mission and Units

Point Mugu and Port Hueneme are located minutes from each other and support the area with their deep water port and airfield that support the Pacific Fleet, squadrons,  Naval Facilities Expeditionary Logistics Center and Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center. Major units at work here at the mobilization site include but are not limited to:

Naval Base Ventura County – Point Mugu/Port Hueneme In-Processing and Check-In

The Quarterdeck is the reporting hub for the base. Upon arrival to Point Mugu, check in at the Quarterdeck in building one with orders, identification and relevant documentation in hand. Staff will direct new arrivals to the appropriate locations. If arriving in Port Hueneme, report to Building 1000 first with orders ready. All newcomers should complete check-in as soon as they arrive.

Naval Base Ventura County – Point Mugu/Port Hueneme Child Care

The Child Development Center for Point Mugu is accredited and designed to provide full care, including meals and whole child development, for youth from six weeks to five years old. Point Mugu has one CDC site, and is not far from Port Hueneme, which has two CDC sites.

The NBVC Mugu Site is located in Building 173 and can be reached at (805) 989-3675. Fees for care are based on parent/guardian status as well as income and availability. All enrollment is online at www.militarychlidcare.com.

Naval Base Ventura County – Point Mugu/Port Hueneme Housing

Housing is available both on and off-base. To acquire housing have the following documents at your disposal to be placed on the housing waiting list:

  • DD FORM 1746 (housing application)
  • Copy of orders
  • Dependency Information, page II
  • Proof of detachment from previous duty station
  • DD Form 2780 Lautenberg Amendment
  • Addendum A (sex offender policy)
  • Privately owned weapons registration forms
  • Power of attorney

Once on the waiting list, you will need to respond to housing offers within one day of the offer. Turning down offers can delay housing.

You have one month to change locations if your situation changes while securing housing. Remember that only two domestic pets are allowed at most housing, except in Camarillo.

Pets should be properly cared for at all times. Recreational vehicles are not permitted to park in the housing areas. All renters should secure renter’s insurance to protect their personal property.

The Housing Office can make recommendations and work with both landlords and tenants to find housing that is affordable to move into within a reasonable time. If someone needs to make arrangements on your behalf, secure a Power of Attorney to allow them to sign for you.

For visitors and other temporary lodging needs, service members should refer to the Navy Gateway Inns & Suites. Reservations must be made in advance for these locations as rooms book up fast. Reservations, availability and details are provided by calling (805) 989-8251.

Naval Base Ventura County – Point Mugu/Port Hueneme Transportation

Traveling to Port Hueneme from US 101, either North or South will lead travelers to the 24 hour Sunkist Gate from Channel Islands Boulevard to Ventura Road where there will be signs for the Sunkist Gate.

From Los Angeles International Airport to Port Mugu, follow signs to I-405 N to I-10 West to CA-1 N. Follow signs to Las Posas Gate on Las Posas Avenue. Once on base, there are few public transportation options so use of a personal recreational vehicle is strongly recommended.

Vehicle Registration And Driver’s License

California laws regarding vehicle registration are detailed. Emissions tests and smog tests must be passed to register a vehicle or obtain an emission control device. The odometer reading must be disclosed. Fees and title, registration, and insurance must be provided in order to register the vehicle within the 60-day limit upon transfer to California.

Motorcycle riders must use approved helmets and safety equipment such as a bright vest and headlight while driving. In addition, they must pass a motorcycle safety course. All drivers must avoid using cell phones while driving or use a hands-free device.

Bicycles must also be registered on the base and feature an assigned decal. Safety equipment, including helmets, must be worn at all times.

Naval Base Ventura County – Point Mugu/Port Hueneme Schools

The Ocean View School District serves young learners from Point Mugu, while those in Camarillo are sent to Pleasant Valley District. The School Liaison Officer will direct families to the school that best suits them for location and quality and advise if bus service is available.

Sailors interested in achieving higher levels of education can take advantage of degree programs offered at area colleges and the academic credits and credit transfers offered to the enlisted with the Navy College Program.
