Military Spouse Career Help: SpouseWorks Fellowship Program

The SpouseWorks Fellowship is a Department of Defense program designed to bridge employment gaps for military spouses. Administered through Military OneSource and formerly known as the Career Accelerator, this program helps connect companies and job seekers.

SpouseWorks Fellowship Program for Military Spouses

This program runs for 12 weeks. It is a full-time commitment in which military spouses work directly for a host company to gain localized experience, build skills, and create professional networks.

The Department of Defense manages the program, while nonprofit partners, such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes initiative, help coordinate the national employer network.

Who Can Participate in the SpouseWorks Fellowship

Spouses of service members are eligible to apply, whether active, Guard, or Reserve. Spouses can apply while stationed in the continental United States or at overseas installations. The availability of a fellowship, whether in-person or remote, depends on corporate participation in a given area. Overseas locations may have lower placement volumes due to international labor laws or other Status of Forces agreements.

The SpouseWorks Fellowship pairs each participant with a SpouseWorks career coach who acts as an advisor to establish a formal professional development plan.

Amplify Seminar Series

Coaches provide regular feedback and help translate specialized military life skills into corporate competencies. Through collaborations with veteran service networks, SpouseWorks Fellowship participants are eligible for the Amplify seminar series, which includes workshops on advanced interview preparation, salary negotiation strategies, and other career development topics.

These seminars run before the start of the 12-week corporate cycle to ensure candidates meet their employers fully prepared for professional immersion.

What to Know About the SpouseWorks Fellowship

The SpouseWorks Fellowship requires the creation of a comprehensive digital resume and portfolio to be reviewed by corporate recruiters. The online dashboard includes several specific tools:

  • The SpouseWorks Resume Builder is a structured tool designed to format professional histories into clean formats preferred by corporate hiring managers.
  • On-Demand Resume Review, where expert human reviewers provide line-by-line critiques of draft resumes within a set tracking period.
  • The Traitify Assessment, which is a personality and aptitude test that measures against seven distinct workplace personality types to suggest optimal career paths.
  • Automated Mock Interviews: A digital training module allowing users to practice.

Once a profile matches an open job, the candidate gets a standard interview with the host company. There is also a formal evaluation process. Those who meet performance benchmarks and integrate into corporate culture may be deemed eligible to interview for permanent vacancies at the host company.
