About Kohl’s

Kohl’s was founded by a Polish immigrant, Maxwell Kohl, who opened a corner grocery store in 1927. He then opened his first supermarket grocery store, Kohl’s Food Stores, in 1946. The first Kohl’s department store was opened in 1962.

Kohl’s family left managing the stores in 1979, and the company was made public in 1992. They expanded extensively in the 2000s. Kohl’s headquarters is in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, and there are over 1,000 stores in every US state except Hawaii.
