What Is the History of Military Spouse Appreciation Day?
President Ronald Reagan established Military Spouse Appreciation Day on May 23rd, 1984. This day recognizes the countless sacrifices and contributions made by military spouses since the days of the Continental Army. It’s a time to thank those supporting our military and making those sacrifices daily.
Congress made Military Spouse Appreciation Day part of National Military Appreciation Month in 1999 to recognize military spouses and the sacrifices they made. Military Spouse Appreciation Day is celebrated the Friday before Mother’s Day in May.
How do people celebrate Military Spouse Appreciation Day?
During the month of May, you might find different events going on near or at your duty station. Some installations might have a week of events going on to celebrate military spouses. Some businesses and companies might also be offering special events and discounts.
There are also many military spouse benefits to keep an eye out for. Benefits such as MWR, license transfer help, military spouse tax benefits, MYCAA, and scholarships just for military spouses can help military spouses in different parts of their life, from employment issues to help with the children.
What are some of the struggles and sacrifices military spouses have to make?
While military life can allow you to live in some amazing places such as Germany or Hawaii, can allow you to meet some amazing people, and teach you things you can carry with you for the rest of your life, there are also many struggles and sacrifices along the way. One of the biggest ones is employment.
Employment struggles affect so many military spouses. From being unable to find the right job to having to quit a job they love to move to the next duty station. Being unable to find good child care, or not being able to use a degree you worked hard on are other roadblocks in a military spouse’s career path.
Even when working for yourself, rules on home-based businesses on military installations, and SOFA laws while OCONUS, can make keeping a business pretty difficult.
Luckily, there are companies and organizations that can help with some of the employment issues military spouses have. Blue Star Families, and Hiring Our Heroes, are great places to start. For military spouse entrepreneurs, AMSE (Association of Military Spouse Entrepreneurs) and MSCC (United States Military Chamber of Commerce) are worth looking at.
