Camp Parks Reserve Forces Training Area Guide
Camp Parks Reserve Forces Training Area (PRFTA) is an Army Reserve training base in Dublin, California. Located near the East Bay, Camp Parks RFTA is part of a unique relationship with Fort Hunter Liggett. DoD literature describes this arrangement as “one garrison located on two installations” to support Army Reserve training.
Find information about Camp Parks, California, below, including check-in procedures, housing, base transportation, lodging for TDY and PSCing personnel, child care, and local schools.
Camp Parks Reserve Forces Training Area History
Camp Parks Reserve Forces Training Area opened in 1942 as a staging area for troops to use to prepare for a second tour of duty in the Pacific. At the time, the base was operated by the U.S. Navy, one of three such operations in the area. The other two were Camp Shoemaker and U.S. Naval Hospital Shoemaker,
As the war ended, the Camp hosted World War Two out processing or demobilization for Navy Seabees returning from the Pacific. Camp Parks suffered the fate of many installations opened during the war. It was deactivated and would not return to service until 1951 during the Korean conflict.
The Secretary of the Navy decommissioned all three Navy operations mentioned above. The Navy leased the land to the County of Alameda until 1951 when it was turned over to the United States Air Force.
Camp Parks was used by the Air Force but was a rare base because it had no flight line. Camp Parks was returned to the United States Army in 1959 when it was held in limbo until 1973, when it was designated as a Reserve Forces training base.
Camp Parks would be redesignated as a semi-active Army installation and began evolving into what we know it today: a Reserve Forces Training Area operated under the control of Fort Hunter Liggett.
Camp Parks Surrounding Area
Camp Parks is near Dublin in Alameda County. The Camp is 35 miles east of San Francisco and a little over 20 miles east of downtown Oakland.
The city of Dublin is named after its sister city in Ireland. Dublin is home to several corporate entities, such as Sybase, Inc., the discount clothing store chain Ross Stores, and Arlen Ness. This area is also known for its golf options; you can try the greens at Dublin Ranch Golf Course and the Bridges Golf Club.
California is a more expensive place to be assigned than many other parts of the country. Be sure to discuss the cost of living in California with your sponsor before you PCS or relocate to the area.
According to the Department of Defense, “Service members are highly encouraged to visit their local Army Community Service, Airmen & Family Readiness Center, or Fleet and Family Support and speak with a Personal Financial Readiness Counselor to develop a realistic budget plan to prepare for the PCS and relocation expenses.”

Child Care
There is no Child Development Center at Camp Parks. Housing
There is some on-post military housing available, but at the time this guide was written, the Department of Defense advises, “Commuting to PRFTA is the norm for the majority of personnel assigned and as one of the most heavily congested traffic areas, travel time, cost of fuel, and car maintenance should be included when budgeting for your relocation.”
The Camp Parks military housing project started in 2005, may provide some with on-post housing options, but much depends on demand and other variables. Contact the Villages at Camp Parks at (925) 556-2250 for help with the application process. Contact the Camp Parks Housing Management Office (HMO) if you need off-post housing. Call 925-875-4688.
