Naval Air Facility El Centro Guide

Since opening in 1946, Naval Air Facility El Centro (NAF El Centro) has cycled through several names, including NAS, National Parachute Test Range, and NAF, but its reputation for pushing limits has never changed. This post is where the pilot ejection seat, Mercury Space Program parachutes, and aeronautical escape systems were first put to the test.
After merging with the U.S. Naval Aerospace Recovery Facility in the early ’70s, it officially became NAF El Centro. Tucked away in Imperial Valley, California, it’s a world-class training ground where visiting squadrons come to sharpen their air combat skills in some of the best flying weather in the country. It’s also the winter home for the Blue Angels. If you and your family are PCSing to the base, here’s what you need to know.

BASE MISSION AND UNITS
NAF El Centro is all about getting the warfighter ready, serving as a premier tactical training hub thanks to its wide-open desert ranges and perfect flying weather. While it’s technically the winter home of the Blue Angels, who spend the winter months here sharpening their routine, the base stays busy year-round supporting a rotating door of Navy and Marine Corps strike fighter squadrons.
You’ll also see plenty of action from the British Joint Helicopter Force (US) and various special ops units like Navy SEALs and Army Green Berets who drop in to use the bombing and parachute ranges. Essentially, if a unit needs to practice high-intensity air combat or precision ordnance delivery without a lot of civilian air traffic in the way, this is where they end up.
