About Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens
Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens opened in the Springfield neighborhood of Jacksonville in 1914. The first animal was a red deer fawn. In 1925, the zoo moved to a site on the Trout River. One of their most popular animals was a Jaguar named Zorro who was added in 1967. The zoo went under redevelopment in 1992 and changed from the Jacksonville Zoo to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens in 2003. The zoo is on 89 acres, with over 2,400 animals. They offer a 10% off military discount on zoo memberships.
