Walmart Hires Nearly 6,000 Military Spouses
Walmart announced the hiring of nearly 6,000 military spouses in the six months since they launched the Military Spouse Career Connection (MSCC) last Veterans Day. Now, in its sixth month, MSCC gives military spouses hiring preference for those who want to work at Walmart or Sam’s Club. The MSCC is a natural step for Walmart. Their Military Family Promise, in its 9th year, guarantees a job at a nearby Walmart or Sam’s Club, for all military personnel and their spouses who move to a different part of the country because of military service.
“Military Spouses Are Highly Desirable Job Candidates”
According to the Senior Director of Military Programs for Walmart, Retired Brig. Gen. Gary Profit, “Military spouses are a diverse, adaptable, educated and team-oriented group of men and women. They have many of the same skills that veterans have, which makes them highly desirable job candidates. It’s our honor to offer them opportunities here at Walmart and beyond.” This shows that Walmart does see the value in hiring military spouses, and in being a company that wants to help them find employment.
Katie Tidmore, a Walmart associate, and first hire through MSCC, says, “As a military wife, I feel like I served alongside my husband in a lot of ways. It was always so hard to find steady or consistent work. I’m grateful to Walmart for such a wonderful program.”
Walmart Also Awards Grant to Hire Heroes USA
In addition to the hiring of 6,000 military spouses, the Walmart Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant to Hire Heroes USA, which is a veteran service organization dedicated to empowering US military members, veterans, and their spouses as they seek civilian employment. The award is to support the expansion of their employment programs and improve data collection and reporting. A portion of the funding will support a program manager for Hire Heroes’ Serving Spouses, a career coaching program that is tailored to military spouses that face unique barriers to employment. Issues such as frequent moves, childcare challenges while a spouse is deployed, and having to re-obtain certifications when moving state to state can all be barriers to employment.
Walmart’s Veterans Welcome Home Commitment
This May also marks the 6th anniversary of Walmart’s Veterans Welcome Home Commitment (VWHC.) VWHC guarantees a job offer to any eligible and honorably discharged US veteran who have separated from active duty since the start of VWHC on Memorial Day, 2013. 226,637 veterans have been hired and 35,383 have been promoted to roles with higher pay and greater responsibility at Walmart and Sam’s Club. This commitment recognizes the important skills and leadership abilities that veterans bring to the civilian workforce and helps veterans ease the transition from active duty to civilian life, which can often be a difficult transition. They are now over 90% of the way to reaching their goal of hiring 250,000 veterans by 2020.
