About the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
At 6714 ft, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is the highest zoo in America. It covers 140 acres, with over 750 animals, and 150 different species. Businessman Spencer Penrose was given a bear in 1916, which inspired him to collect animals. The zoo was founded in 1926 to house the collection of exotic animals. In 1938, it was incorporated as a non-profit public trust to the people of Colorado Springs.
