Whistler Blackcomb History

Whistler Blackcomb is the combination of two resorts, Whistler, and Blackcomb. Whistler was originally conceived as a part of a bid to win the 1968 Winter Olympics. The bid failed but construction was started anyway. The resort opened in 1966.

Blackcomb opened in 1980, and there was some intense rivalry in the 1980s and 1990s. The two resorts were merged in 2003 after the firm that developed Blackcomb purchased Whistler in 1997.

Whistler Blackcomb was also able to win a bid for the 2010 Winter Olympics where they hosted the alpine skiing events. In 2016, Vail Resorts purchased Whistler Blackcomb Holdings.

Going back in time, the valley area between the two resorts was first surveyed and documented in 1858 by Hudson’s Bay men who were looking for an alternative route into the Cariboo area.
